What is a rough estimate of the cost of an air conditioning system?

3600 sq. ft. home, downstairs has its own CVC and that is fine. Second floor must be replaced because it is always hot in summer and cold in winter. Contractor told me I need to replace because the compressor can not present .... He says I need a ton Compressor 3, and has a ton of 1.5, is why its not cold enough. Does that sound right? He said it would about 6k installed .... this sounds good? Thank you.
